The disappearance of transparency. Once upon a time, in the time of Windows 95, there was a program called Paint. This was part of the Windows 95 operating system. With this program you could save a gif image file with a transparent background. Then with the death of Windows 98 or the birth of Windows XP, paint lost this option to save a file with a transparent background. Don't panic thou, as Microsoft Photo Editor, (part of Windows XP operating system) can global fill with transparency. Photo Editor can also save files in the png format as well as gif and other formats. So we can now save images with a transparent background in the gif or png format. So now you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use Photo Editor to save images with a transparent background? Where is Microsoft Photo Editor? O' it's disappeared! To run Microsoft Photo Editor on Windows Vista or Windows 7. 1; Copy all the files in directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd from your Windows XP. 2; Save the files in any directory on your new Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer. 3; You don't even need to set PHOTOED.EXE to run in 'Windows XP compatibility mode'. The files in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd are; PHOTOED.EXE PHOTOED.HLP CHALKCHA.dll EMBOSS.dll GRAPHICP.dll NOTEPAPE.dll PHOTOED.cnt photoed.gid STAINEDG.dll STAMP.dll TEXTURIZ.dll WATERCOL.dll 1033\PEINTL.dll

You may only need to copy PTOTOED.exe, but I have not tested this.

 Here is an image with a transparent background. Here is an image with a transparent background.

I see that BBC 1 is also starting a BBC 1 HD simulcast channel on all digital television platforms.
See page at; http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/05_may/28/hd.shtml

No problem with it on Freeview as each transmitter is for the local array but...

As BBC1 has regional programs you will need more room on satellite to have all the different regions.

Or will there be;
  • A; Half an hour of the test card after the national news.
  • B; A different program to BBC1 SD after the national news.
  • C; A different regional program each time. Eg. The whole of the UK will get BBC1 local news from the Isle of Wight, them the next time from South West Northumberland, BBC East Riding, BBC Isles of Scilly.... or
  • D; BBC1 London only. (To keep ever body in Scotland happy)
The BBC have now started a blog about this at; http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/2010/05/bbc-one-is-going-high-definiti.shtml
I've posted my question about BBC1 HD regions on the BBC TV blog page. See blog 46 at; http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/2010/05/bbc-one-is-going-high-definiti.shtml#P96684549 The reply from the BBC's Danielle Nagler. Northern locations to get greater exposure.

The BBC are in a process of unprecedented editorial devolution, the BBC aims to shift half of all its network production out of London by 2016. In the biggest single move in its history, no less than five departments Sport, Children's, Learning, Radio Five Live, and parts of Future Media and Technology - will transfer from London to Greater Manchester. An enormous range of television, radio and online content, including some of our most loved shows like Match of The Day and Blue Peter, will be made in the North.

If they move Blue Peter from Londons Television Centre, will they also move the Blue Peter garden to Manchester? This includes the green house, fish pond, buried treasure that was buried after digging the last lot up in 2000. Buried treasure under the BBC staff car park and a few statues of some of the departed Blue Peter dogs.
